Your Toddler's Mood Swings getting too much to handle?
5 quick tips to breathe easy!
Ignore: Whenever there is an emotional breakdown with
your toddler, sometimes it is good to let them cry. It helps them to release their stress. and gives them some time to settle down their feelings. Try to ignore for 10 minutes and then talk to them.
Do not panic: Emotional breakdowns will happen not just at home but in public places as well. Usually, parents get embarrassed if such things happen in public and quickly give in to their child's demands. Remember, all the people watching, are either a parent or have been around other's kids, in other words they themselves have gone through this phase. Be calm and try to tackle your child with a reassuring voice. Children sense the panic in us and respond to it with more intensity. If it is getting too dramatic, then consider leaving the place or move to an area where there are other kids to distract.
Distract: This is widely used strategy by all mother's. It works best all the time. Keep few and best things that your child gets distracted to hidden and unused. Take them out or use them only in these situations. For example, if there is a favorite song that your child likes, do not use it all the time, sing it only to distract her from her emotional breakdown.
Be strict and stern occasionally: Sometimes, the demands children make, can be totally unacceptable. For example if they want to jump from a dangerous height and insist on doing that, no matter what! Just say NO! and make sure your NO sounds like a BIG NO! Keep these stern NOs only to the situations that requires extreme caution. In other scenarios, manipulate them politely, for example if they do not want to leave the swing, you can suggest to swing for 5 more times and then leave it for the other children who've been waiting. Start the countdown and count loudly.
Change the scene: If they throw a fit in the house, change the location to the play area or take them to your neighbors' house. Change of faces around them and the new setting will take away the focus and also help to calm down. Toddlers like to be with slightly elder kids, so taking your child to them also works.
